FAQ

Is Monero not private? Monero is known for its privacy features and is currently considered the most advanced project in protecting user privacy. Monero Lab is a leading innovator in this field. Mordinals utilizes a small workaround for its inscriptions to create artificially dissimilar outputs, but this should not impact overall privacy as long as the decoy set is selected appropriately

Is Monero non-fungible? No, Monero is designed to be fungible, and in fact, it is more fungible than other blockchains due to its advanced privacy features. The way Mordinals are implemented in Monero uses a small modification to the Monero protocol to artificially reveal a portion of private information and announce inscription. Transactions made with the standard Monero wallet continue to have all the same privacy features they had before Mordinals were introduced.

Do Mordinals impact fungibility? Inscriptions are not fungible, unlike other Monero transactions, and therefore should not be used in the decoy set. Otherwise, their growth may threaten fungibility. To address this, Mordinals propose a formal protocol that will enable the core to mark inscription outputs deterministically, and prevent their use in the decoy set. Ultimately, it is up to the Monero team to decide whether to implement this protocol.

Can i buy or sell mordinal? Currently, we're adding transfer feature and as soon as it's available it could be traded OTC. In future we can add support for apps like https://emblem.pro/ should there be a demand.

How can i prove ownership of mordinal? There are at least two ways to accomplish this. Firstly, each mordinal is associated with a specific transaction, and the transaction owner can generate a proof of ownership using standard Monero tools. Secondly, each Ordinal is linked to a text field (metadata) that the owner can modify by creating a new transaction every time. This allows them to provide proof of ownership, such as an ID on a social network.

Is every inscription unique? Yes, every inscription has a unique hash, which means you can only inscribe a single image once. Further transactions with the same image will be ignored by mordinals explorer

Is it possible for Mordinals to be banned from the blockchain? Unlike prunable signatures, the tx extra is a permanent part of the transaction body and is included in the hash together with other elements, which makes it a part of the transaction identifier. Thus, deleting it from the blockchain would compromise the consistency of the transaction chain. In simpler terms, it cannot be removed.

What would happen if the tx_extra were removed? If Monero developers decide to remove the tx_extra for future inscriptions, Mordinals will switch to other methods to store its data in transactions, such as using outputs instead. The project does not depend on it and simply uses it as the least invasive option.
